Remains of Former Kenya Rugby Coach Felix Oloo Expected in Nairobi Tonight

The body of former Kenya Lionesses coach Felix Oloo is expected to arrive in Nairobi on Monday night following his death in the United States earlier this month.

Oloo, widely known as “Mwalimu” for his commitment to developing rugby talent, died on 4 May in Washington State after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 405. He was 41. Family members, friends and colleagues are preparing to receive his remains at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport before they are transferred to a funeral home in Nairobi.

His burial is scheduled for 6 June at his family home in Asembo, Siaya County. A funeral committee has coordinated the repatriation process, with members of the Kenyan community in Seattle accompanying the body back to Kenya.

Tributes have continued from across the rugby community following his death. Former Impala Saracens coach Mitch Ocholla described Oloo as a man who had a unique ability to build relationships with people across the world. Dennis Mwanja, who succeeded him as Kenya Lionesses coach, said Oloo invited him to join the technical bench and continued to offer guidance and mentorship after moving to the United States.

Ernest “Marine” Gikonyo, a long-time friend and former teammate, reflected on their 26-year friendship and Oloo’s dedication to nurturing young rugby players. Those who worked closely with him have highlighted his commitment to developing talent and expanding opportunities within the sport.

In addition to his coaching career, Oloo was an accomplished player. He played as a flanker for Nakuru RFC and was part of the team that won the Kenya Cup in 2013 and 2014.

His influence extended beyond coaching and competition, with many remembering him as a teacher, mentor and advocate for grassroots rugby development. Meanwhile, the Washington State Patrol is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident that led to his death.
