Kenya, Netherlands Deepen Cooperation to Protect Kenyans Living Abroad
Kenya and the Netherlands are seeking to strengthen cooperation on the welfare and protection of Kenyans living in the European country.
Dutch Ambassador to Kenya Jan Bakker met Principal Secretary in the State Department for Diaspora Affairs Roseline Njogu in Nairobi, where they discussed ways to improve support for Kenyans abroad and deepen bilateral cooperation.
Njogu outlined Kenya’s efforts to strengthen assistance for citizens living and working overseas, with diaspora welfare remaining a key part of government policy.
The Netherlands, which is home to a sizeable Kenyan community, was identified as
an important partner in areas including citizen protection, counselling and people-to-people ties. The discussions reflect Kenya’s broader efforts to strengthen its engagement with citizens abroad.
The government is seeking closer cooperation with host countries to protect the rights and interests of Kenyans overseas while also using diaspora networks to strengthen bilateral relations. For the Netherlands, closer engagement with Kenya provides an opportunity to address issues affecting the Kenyan community in the country while strengthening social, cultural and economic links between the two nations.
The two sides agreed to explore practical areas of cooperation, paving the way for initiatives aimed at improving diaspora protection and strengthening Kenya-Netherlands relations. The engagement is part of the State Department’s wider efforts to build partnerships with countries hosting Kenyan citizens and place their welfare at the centre of Kenya’s international engagement.
