Kenyan Nurse Builds KSh84 Million Dream Home in Ohio

A Kenyan-born nurse has completed the construction of a custom-built family home valued at about $625,000 (approximately KSh84 million) in Huber Heights, Ohio.
Judy Nyakerario Misoro, who is originally from Kisii County, undertook the project with her family after several years of structured financial planning and consistent saving. The five-bedroom house includes a finished basement and expanded living spaces, replacing the three-bedroom rental home where the family had been living.
She said the decision to build was driven by the need for more space for her five children. In their previous home, the children often shared rooms, which highlighted the need for a more suitable living arrangement.
The family took part in designing the house, with the children contributing ideas on room layouts and shared areas. To finance the project, Misoro, her husband, also a healthcare worker, and their eldest daughter, who works as a nurse, set a goal to raise $100,000 within 18 months.
They met the target by working extra shifts and reducing non-essential expenses, including travel and major purchases. Misoro described the process as demanding, noting the challenge of managing work schedules, family responsibilities, and construction planning.
She said the support and encouragement from her children played an important role in sustaining the effort.
