The Late Prof.Samson Kimenyi
Tribute by: Ngethe Ikanyi/Lowell,Massachusetts
Prof. Kimenyi was a unique and a special man who could interact freely with the mighty and politically powerful and with the very common person down there. As a Professor of Economics in the University of Connecticut, he had established a Graduate conduit for Kenyans where many have gotten their Phds and he will never talk about it when he settles for nyama choma in Lowell.
Soft spoken, Mwalim Kimenyi was full of sense of humor and will argue a point at its level of audience. He was a close friend of Prof. George Saitoti, former (Vice President) who he brought to Lowell to address our people and even attended Saint Stephens Church Lowell, back in the days of Nyayo Era when the Kenyan government was viewed as the enemy of the diaspora.
Kimenyi took the back stage to prepare Nyama choma dinner for the Vice President at Uncle Willie’s Tewksbury residence. Dinner with a sitting Vice president is not a common thing to many.We interacted and asked questions.
Prof.Kimenyi, established a Girls high school in Ndaka ini, the Hekima Girls where I enrolled my daughter Maureen. As a father of three boys, I believe he adopted daughters this way and doubled up in promoting education. His very prayerful wife Irene Kimenyi is an educator and I can’t fail to mention her energy in shipping books to Kenya. This family has given back to the community in a big way.
Details of happy moments we had with Prof Kimenyi in Nairobi may not feature here, but the Kigumu Welfare group comprising of able men from his home area, to promote education and community welfare in their locality was an inspiration to me and many others.
Details of Pro. Kimenyi’s achievements may only be derived from different sources and pieces put together as no one will be able to narrate it all.
To Irene Kimenyi, the mother of the boys,I wish you strength to continue from where your dear husband has left. And to the boys, I know you were raised strong in a Christian way, kindly team up with your Mom and do the job the way your daddy would love it done.Let us celebrate the well lived life of Prof. Mwangi Kimenyi by commiting to copy part if not all of his love for the family and the community.
Mr David Ikanyi, is a Community Leader in New England
