Kenyan Woman Killed in Riyadh Accident Repatriated After Weeks of Delay

The body of Kenyan national Mary Gathere, known as “Toto,” arrived in Kenya on 24 April after weeks of delays in repatriation from Saudi Arabia.

Gathere died on 3 April in Riyadh following a road accident. Her family faced an extended wait as logistical challenges delayed the return of her remains. Updates were shared publicly by her sister, Dorcas Gathere, who outlined the difficulties encountered during the process.

According to the family, the Kenyan Embassy in Saudi Arabia cited a shortage of coffins as a key factor in the delay. The Saudi Ministry of Health was also reported to be experiencing broader logistical constraints, which affected the handling and transport of remains. These issues forced the family to postpone burial arrangements.

Relatives confirmed the arrival of the body and expressed relief that the process had been completed. Burial is expected to take place on Monday, although final plans are still being organised.

The process requires coordination between diplomatic missions, host authorities, and service providers. Delays can arise from documentation requirements, preservation procedures, and transport logistics, often prolonging the uncertainty for affected families.
