Kenya and Türkiye Sign Defence Deal with Focus on Drone Technology Cooperation

Kenya and Türkiye signed a defence cooperation agreement on 6 May during the SAHA Istanbul defence industry exhibition, with senior defence officials from both countries in attendance.

The agreement aims to strengthen military ties between the two countries, with a focus on capacity building, training, and the exchange of defence technology. It reflects Kenya’s continued effort to broaden its security partnerships beyond its traditional allies.

The two countries already have an established defence relationship. In 2021, Kenya acquired 118 Hizir mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles from Turkish manufacturers. In 2024, it also procured Bayraktar TB2 drones. These deals form part of Kenya’s wider defence engagements, which also include cooperation with France and Ethiopia.

Türkiye has been expanding its defence exports in recent years. It has set a target of US$11 billion in defence and aerospace exports by 2028, following reported exports of around US$10 billion in 2025.

Kenya was granted Non-NATO Ally status in June 2024, which allows closer cooperation with NATO members without full membership. Türkiye is a NATO member, providing an additional framework for defence collaboration between the two countries.

The signing took place at the SAHA Istanbul Defence, Aviation and Aerospace Cluster Association exhibition, which hosted more than 1,700 companies and delegations from over 120 countries.

The agreement comes as countries continue to adjust their security partnerships in response to changing global conditions.
