Jubilee postpones primaries in 10 counties

Jubilee Party primaries were called off in some counties due to anomalies, party Secretary General Raphael Tuju has said.

Mr Tuju on Friday said after talks with the Party leadership, cancellation of the primaries to a later date was agreed upon in order to uphold the transparency and fairness of the process.

Nominations were called off in Narok, Kajiado, Kericho, Bomet, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet and Embu counties.

In other counties, the cancellation of the exercise was only in a few constituencies.

“In a limited number of constituencies and the respective Returning Officers will be able to make the last call. These are Kiambu, Laikipia, Meru and West Pokot,” said Mr Tuju in a statement following chaos that ensued after delays and lack of voting materials marred the process.

He added that the party will monitor closely voting in Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri and Nyandarua counties where voting was taking place.

The Jubilee Party primaries were marked with incidents such as the burning of polling materials, protests by voters in various counties amidst the fear of rigging by aspirants and threats to defect to other parties.

In some areas, 2013 Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission registers were being used, leaving out the names of registered voters and in others names of aspirants were not on ballot boxes.
