Cost of Household Commodities Dropped in September
The cost of goods in Kenya fell in September as per data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. The country recorded lower inflation levels as compared to a similar time last year. In September, Kenya posted an inflation rate of 3.83 percent compared to August’s 5 percent.
At the same time, data from the KNBS reveals a 1.87 percent drop in inflation rates for the month as compared to 5.70 percent in September 2018.
Monthly Consumer Price Indices show that prices of household commodities were slightly lower in September. KNBS noted a 0.11 percent drop in CPI from 201.78 in August 2019 to 201.57 in September 2019.
At the same time, data from the KNBS reveals a 1.87 percent drop in inflation rates for the month as compared to 5.70 percent in September 2018.

The decrease in the prices of some food and non-alcoholic commodities saw the Food and Non-Alcoholic Index drop by 0.40%. Such change came from a decline in prices of carrots, cabbages, and tomatoes, which decreased by 9.80 percent, 6.32 percent, and 4.14 percent respectively.
However, low inflation rates do not draw a full picture of the general cost of living. This is because the price of other essential services increased during the same period. For instance, the cost of housing and utilities increased by 0.07%. At the same time, the transport index grew by 0.48 percent because of an increase in the price of petrol and diesel.
