Cost Of Doing Business In Turkana Shocks Netizens

A notice of payment for way leave on the laying of fibre optic cables on the Kapenguria – Lodwar road had shocked Kenyans on Twitter.

The document which showed Turkana County Acting Director of Revenue Hellen Nakaru demanding a whopping Sh93 million from Geonet Technologies for the project or hence cease work is perhaps a glimpse on the high cost of doing business in the county.

“The Directorate of Revenue has since issued you with an invoice of Ksh.93,040,200 herewith attached for immediate payment before you resume your works of laying fibre optic cable for a distance of 93 KMs”, the letter read in part.

The letter continued, “Kindly note that by this letter you are advised to stop any works of laying fibre optic cable until payment is made”.

A few months ago, kenyanbusinessfeed.com exposed the corruption at the county where the KCB Bank Group Lodwar Branch in Turkana County was used to launder proceeds of corruption.

“There was revenue fraud at Turkana County Govt. Very glaring evidence is attached here. The sad reality is that those sent from banking fraud unit at DCI and EACC seems to have been compromised’, said the source who did not wish to be mentioned.

John Korikel, immediate former Director of Revenue for the county is said to have taken Ksh8 million from Chinese construction company whose equipments had been impounded but instead of depositing it into the right revenue account for the county, he put it into an account he had opened at the bank.

He later took Ksh2 million from that amount and deposited it into the correct county revenue account. Ksh6 million vanished.
