Adelaide Vigil Honours Sheila Chebii, Calls for Answers Over Her Death

Women of Colour, led by the Legetyo Queens, gathered on the steps of Parliament House in Adelaide on Tuesday to honour Sheila Chebii and call for greater transparency over the circumstances of her death.
The vigil, held on North Terrace, brought together community members, advocates and supporters. Organisers described the event as a gathering of remembrance and solidarity for Sheila’s family rather than a protest.
Lady Emily Kotir OAM, who led the vigil, said the event was intended to support Sheila’s family and seek answers about the events surrounding her death. Organisers said the gathering reflected a shared commitment to dignity, truth and justice.
Sheila Chebii, 26, reportedly went to work at Meriton Suites on Sussex Street in Sydney on 17 May and did not return home. Nearly a month later, questions remain about the sequence of events and the information provided to her family.
Concerns have been raised about delays in notifying SafeWork NSW and about communication from the authorities involved. Family members have reportedly been shown footage and information that they say has raised further questions rather than providing clarity about what happened.
Speakers at the vigil also highlighted wider concerns about workplace safety and accountability. They said Sheila’s case reflected broader challenges faced by families seeking information after the death of a loved one.
Community leaders called for a thorough and transparent coronial investigation, saying a full account of the circumstances surrounding Sheila’s death was necessary to provide answers for her family.
Attendees paid tribute to Sheila’s life and expressed support for her loved ones. Many described the gathering as an opportunity to remember her while reinforcing the importance of transparency and accountability.
Supporters said they would continue to seek answers as investigations proceed. The vigil in Adelaide served as both a memorial to Sheila and a call for clarity about the circumstances of her death.
