2027 Elections: Why Kenyan Politicians Are Turning to the Diaspora
Kenyans abroad are emerging as a key target for political campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Election, raising concerns over the spread of divisive rhetoric beyond Kenya’s borders.
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), which is mandated to monitor and address hate speech and other forms of divisive political expression, faces the challenge of tracking increasingly active campaign networks within the diaspora. The issue extends beyond political messaging. Some calls have urged Kenyans living abroad to suspend remittances as a way of putting pressure on the current administration.
Remittances support millions of households and form an important part of Kenya’s economy, making their use as a political tool a significant concern. The growing role of the diaspora is also attracting political aspirants. Kenyans living abroad are increasingly being viewed as an important constituency, particularly because many have developed expectations around accountability, institutional reform and measurable development.
Several political figures are already planning engagements with Kenyan communities in the United States. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Chief Justice David Maraga have scheduled US tours, while Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement is preparing to establish a presence among Kenyans abroad.
Texas is expected to be an important centre of these efforts. The state has the largest Kenyan-born population in the United States, with more than 18,000 Kenyan-born residents in counties including Dallas, Tarrant, Harris and Collin.
The Kenya Diaspora Advisory Council of Texas (KDAC-TX) is one of the organisations coordinating the community. Its leadership includes cybersecurity expert Catherine Biwott, whose professional background is relevant to efforts to protect digital platforms and counter online misinformation.
The council is chaired by Monicah Kariuki, a nurse and community leader who has been involved in organising Kenyans in Texas. Under her leadership, KDAC-TX has focused on community coordination, cultural awareness and increasing the participation of Kenyans abroad in national discussions.
The expanding political activity among Kenyans overseas is placing greater importance on organisations such as KDAC-TX. Political campaigns are increasingly seeking support from diaspora communities, while the communities themselves are becoming more organised in expressing their interests and expectations.
