“You Could Be Sent Back”: USCIS Director Warns on Green Card Eligibility

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced a significant increase in enforcement against immigration fraud, with Director Joseph Edlow warning of stricter action against violators.

Edlow said the agency is expanding its investigative efforts by adding new special agents and setting up multiple tip lines for the public to report suspected fraud. He stressed that all reports will be taken seriously and confirmed that both recent and past cases will be reviewed in coordination with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

He added that individuals who believe they avoided detection in the past may face renewed scrutiny. He described the crackdown as part of the agency’s responsibility to protect national security.

Edlow said that USCIS will continue to prioritise enforcement, despite what he referred to as challenges from judicial decisions. His remarks reflect a firm approach that emphasises strict review processes over more flexible immigration policies.

Edlow also highlighted the requirement for financial independence among applicants. He said that permanent residency should be granted only to individuals who can support themselves, adding that those unable to do so are unlikely to qualify for a Green Card.

The announcement follows broader measures affecting immigration policy, including pauses on certain benefits for specific countries and enforcement actions involving Green Card holders. USCIS has also strengthened its authority by establishing an internal group of agents with the power to carry firearms and make arrests in both civil and criminal cases
