Kimeli set for Boston test against elite marathon field

Kenyan long-distance runner Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli is poised to make a highly anticipated marathon debut at the Boston Marathon on Monday, stepping into one of the most competitive fields in recent history.
Kimeli transitions to the 42km distance with an impressive résumé on the track, having finished fourth in the 5,000m at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and clinching the Diamond League 5,000m title in 2022.
His shift to road racing has been equally convincing, highlighted by victory at the Copenhagen Half Marathon in 2025 with a time of 58:23.
The 26-year-old has maintained strong form this season, finishing second at both the Burj Half Marathon and the Lisbon Half Marathon, clocking 59:38 and 58:04 respectively.
These performances position him as a potential dark horse despite making his first appearance over the full marathon distance.
However, Kimeli faces a daunting challenge in Boston, where 17 athletes in the men’s field boast personal bests under 2:07. Among them is seasoned Kenyan star Benson Kipruto, a four-time major winner with victories in Boston, Chicago, Tokyo, and New York. Kipruto returns with a personal best of 2:02:16 and remains one of the favourites.
Defending champion John Korir will also be in the mix, alongside Ethiopia’s Milkesa Mengesha and the Netherlands’ Abdi Nageeye, underlining the global depth of the field.
Another Kenyan to watch is Alex Masai, who makes his Boston debut following a third-place finish at the Chicago Marathon, where he set a personal best of 2:04:37.
With a strong Kenyan contingent aiming for dominance, Kimeli’s debut adds an exciting subplot to the race. While experience may favour established marathoners, his speed and recent road form suggest he could surprise on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
