Sheila Chebii Laid to Rest as Investigation Into Death Continues

Twenty-five-year-old Sheila Jepkorir Chebii was buried on Saturday in Elgeyo Marakwet County as family, friends and mourners gathered to pay their final respects while investigations into her death in Australia remain ongoing.
Her burial follows weeks of mourning and continued efforts by relatives and members of the Kenyan community in Australia to obtain answers about the circumstances surrounding her death in Sydney. Australian authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains active, with detectives pursuing several lines of inquiry.
Police have stated that there is no evidence to suggest self-harm and have emphasised that investigations are continuing. A senior officer has been assigned to oversee the case, a move welcomed by community representatives who say it will strengthen coordination and oversight.
The case received wider public focus earlier this month when members of the Kenyan community in Sydney held a peaceful march to Meriton, the apartment developer connected to the location where Chebii spent her final hours. Organisers described the demonstration as peaceful and orderly, with participants calling for justice and greater transparency.
Following the march, family representatives and Kenyan diaspora leaders met investigators and received updates on the progress of the inquiry. Authorities also granted relatives access to a site linked to the investigation to help them better understand the circumstances under examination.
The family’s legal representatives are expected to receive documentation that could provide further information about the case as investigations continue.
For many Kenyans living in Australia, Chebii’s death has become a focal point for community advocacy.
Vigils, prayer gatherings and public statements have reflected a shared commitment to ensuring that the circumstances of her death are fully established.
While the burial marks a significant moment for her family, questions surrounding her death remain unresolved. Communities in both Kenya and Australia continue to await the outcome of the investigation as calls for justice persist.
