Challenge, Clarify, or Execute: The Leadership Rule That Demands Accountability
Leadership isn’t just about giving orders. It’s also about creating clarity, encouraging people to challenge bad decisions, and expecting action once everyone understands the direction.
In this widely circulated 2021 email attributed to Elon Musk, managers were reportedly given three options when receiving explicit instructions: explain why the direction was wrong, ask for clarification if it was unclear, or execute it.
The message was severe: ignoring the instruction without doing any of those could result in being asked to resign.
Whatever you think of the management style, there’s an interesting principle underneath it: disagreement is allowed, questions are allowed, but silent inaction isn’t.
Great organizations need people who can challenge ideas when necessary but they also need accountability and clear communication when decisions are made.
Would this management style make a company more effective, or take things too far?
