Sheila Chebii Investigation Sparks Racism Debate Among Australian Media Figures

The death of 25-year-old Kenyan student Sheila Chebii in Sydney has led to questions about the lack of media coverage in Australia, despite widespread reporting and public discussion in Kenya.
Chebii, who arrived in Australia six weeks before her death, reportedly died while working at a hotel linked to one of the country’s largest residential apartment developers. Reports indicate that she fell from an upper floor of the building. Authorities have not confirmed the circumstances of her death or released an official cause, prompting calls for greater transparency from her family and supporters.
The case has received extensive coverage in Kenya and has been discussed in the country’s parliament. Demonstrations have been held in Nairobi and outside the Australian High Commission in Canberra. In Sydney, protesters have marched to the hotel where Chebii worked, carrying signs calling for justice and urging authorities to provide updates on the investigation.
In Australia, however, the case has received little public attention. New South Wales Police have not issued a public statement, and major Australian news organisations have not reported on the incident. This lack of coverage has been criticised by broadcasters Jan Fran and Antoinette Lattouf on their We Used to Be Journos podcast.
During a recent episode, Fran noted that the case had generated substantial international reporting but had not been covered by Australian media outlets. Lattouf said the absence of reporting raised questions about whether race affects which stories receive attention. Fran also argued that the response may have been different if the deceased had come from a Western country such as Norway or Canada.
The case has renewed discussion about representation in Australian media. Community groups have long argued that incidents involving migrants and people of colour receive less coverage than comparable cases involving other groups. The limited reporting on Chebii’s death has been cited by some as an example of this concern.
For Chebii’s family, the lack of information remains a central issue. Relatives say they have received few updates and are still waiting for official findings. They hope the investigation will clarify the circumstances of her death and establish whether any further action is required.
