ODM Backs Proposal to Build Raila Odinga Monument in Nairobi

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has endorsed a proposal to erect a monument in Nairobi’s Central Business District to honour Raila Amollo Odinga for his contribution to Kenya’s democratic and political development.

The proposal was introduced in the Nairobi County Assembly by Nairobi West MCA Rex Omolleh. It seeks to recognise the veteran opposition leader through a public monument reflecting his role in governance reforms, constitutional change and infrastructure development.

In a statement issued on Friday, ODM described the initiative as an appropriate tribute to a leader whose political career has been marked by resilience and personal sacrifice. Although the original motion proposed Uhuru Park as the location, ODM has recommended that the monument be placed at the Supreme Court roundabout.

The party said the site better reflects Odinga’s long association with legal and political efforts to advance electoral justice and constitutional governance. ODM noted that the Supreme Court has played a significant role in Kenya’s democratic history, making it a suitable location to commemorate Odinga’s contribution to the country’s constitutional and political development.

Artistic impressions accompanying the proposal show a copper-coloured statue of Odinga standing on a raised platform. The base carries the inscription “Raila Odinga” together with the years “1945–2025”, recognising his lifetime of public service.

The monument also features the words “A Tribute to Democracy” and one of Odinga’s well-known statements: “It is the people who must make their own decisions about their future.” The design is intended to honour both his political career and his role in Kenya’s democratic reform movement.

ODM said Kenya has a long-standing practice of recognising distinguished citizens through honours such as medals, titles, road names and public monuments. The party argued that Odinga’s record, which includes detention without trial, leadership in the opposition during the one-party era and participation in constitutional reform campaigns, makes him deserving of similar recognition.

The proposal will now be considered by the Nairobi County Assembly as members decide whether to support the planned memorial.
