Kibera Housing Project 80% Complete, Set to Deliver 4,465 Units

The Soweto East Zone B Affordable Housing Project in Kibera is more than 80 per cent complete and will deliver 4,465 housing units and key social amenities at a cost of Sh7.4 billion.
The project, led by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, is intended to improve living conditions for over 4,000 residents. It includes one-room, two-room and three-room units designed for low-income households. The development also provides a primary school, a kindergarten, a health centre, commercial areas and recreational spaces, aiming to support a complete residential community.
Infrastructure works form a central part of the project. These include internal access roads, a paved road linking to Joash Olum Primary School, a borehole-supported water supply, sewer connections and a solid waste management system. Flood control measures have also been installed, such as culverts and open drainage channels that direct rainwater into the Ngong River.
President William Ruto inspected the site earlier this week and described the project as a key part of the government’s affordable housing programme. He said the initiative is intended to improve living standards, support livelihoods and expand opportunities. He added that access to decent housing should be available to all Kenyans.
The construction phase has created more than 2,500 direct jobs. Local artisans and small businesses have supplied materials such as doors and windows, supporting activity within the informal sector.
The government has also indicated plans to revive the Kenya Railways Corporation housing project in Kibera, which could add about 900 more units. These efforts are part of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which identifies affordable housing as a priority for inclusive urban development.
