Kenyan Woman in Israel Stuck as Conflict Disrupts Flights and Evacuation Plans

A Kenyan national in Tel Aviv says the ongoing conflict has prevented her from returning home after Israel’s airspace closures disrupted travel.

Wanja Mwaura travelled to Israel in 2024 for medical treatment and has since recovered. She had planned to return to Kenya, but flight suspensions and security concerns have delayed her departure.

She describes daily life in the city as unpredictable rather than constantly dangerous. Residents receive mobile alerts warning of incoming threats, usually allowing about ninety seconds to reach bomb shelters. These shelters are built into homes and public spaces and are widely used. Over time, she says, people have adapted to these conditions by remaining alert and prepared.

Mwaura notes strong community support during emergencies. Residents assist one another in reaching safe areas, including foreign nationals. Kenyans living in the area have also formed informal support networks, regularly checking on each other and offering help where needed.

The Kenyan consulate has introduced a registration system to track citizens in the country. However, evacuation remains difficult due to the unstable security situation and limited travel options. Many affected individuals continue to face uncertainty over when they can leave.

Despite the challenges, Mwaura remains hopeful. She expresses appreciation for visiting religious and historic sites in Jerusalem and says she feels reassured by the protection provided to all residents.
