Peninah Wanjiru, from Ndondori, travelled to Saudi Arabia in search of work but later left her employer and lived outside formal employment arrangements. During this period, she entered into a relationship and gave birth to a baby girl.
Without a stable income or valid residency documents, Wanjiru became vulnerable to arrest. Saudi authorities detained her for lacking proper documentation and subsequently deported her to Kenya. She was unable to travel with her child due to legal and administrative barriers affecting the infant’s status.
Now back in Kenya, Wanjiru is reportedly experiencing significant emotional distress following the separation. Her family and local community leaders have called on the Kenyan government, humanitarian organisations, and other stakeholders to assist in facilitating her reunion with her child.
The case reflects the difficulties faced by migrant workers in the Gulf region, particularly those without legal status. Reuniting Wanjiru with her daughter is expected to require coordination between Kenyan diplomatic officials, Saudi authorities, and child welfare agencies.
