Kenyan Rugby Star Joshua Weru Signs with Philadelphia Eagles

Kenyan rugby player Joshua Weru has signed with the Philadelphia Eagles through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Programme, becoming the first athlete from Kenya and East Africa to join an NFL roster.
Weru, who was born in Nairobi, secured the deal as an undrafted free agent with international designation following the 2026 NFL Draft. His signing places him among a small group of international athletes selected for development outside the traditional American college football system.
Before moving to American football, Weru played rugby union as a backrow forward and Number 8 for Kenya’s national team, the Simbas. He built a reputation for his speed, physical strength, and tackling ability. These qualities are considered well-suited to the defensive edge rusher role he is expected to train for in the NFL.
Scouts in the United States have identified Weru as a promising but inexperienced prospect. They have highlighted his athletic ability while noting that he must improve technical skills such as timing in pass rushing and reading the game. His background in rugby is seen as a strong base for adapting to the demands of American football.
