Kenyan Accused of Killing Girlfriend in UK Arrested, Faces Extradition to London

A Kenyan man accused of murdering his partner in Britain has been remanded in custody in Nairobi as authorities prepare for extradition proceedings.

Brian Kiprop Kipglagat was arrested on 10 June at the Namanga border crossing while allegedly attempting to enter Tanzania using a temporary travel permit issued on the same day. Prosecutors told the court that he was carrying a Kenyan passport and had been moving between different locations without a fixed residence, raising concerns that he could flee if released.

The case relates to the death of Maryanne Nduta Kilonzo, a London-based banker who was killed in January 2025. British authorities sought assistance from Kenya after Kipglagat left the UK. Detectives in Nairobi, working with immigration officials, arrested him following several weeks of surveillance.

During proceedings at the Milimani Law Courts, prosecuting counsel Joyce Olajo, appearing for the Director of Public Prosecutions, asked the court to deny bail and allow Kipglagat to be detained for 21 days. She said the seriousness of the murder allegation, which falls under Sections 203 and 204 of Kenya’s Penal Code, justified continued detention.

Olajo told the court that Kenya and the United Kingdom have an extradition agreement. Formal documents from British authorities are expected to be submitted through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Attorney General before being presented to the court.

The prosecution also stated that, after the alleged killing, Kipglagat sent a text message to one of Kilonzo’s relatives describing her death as a “misfortune”. Investigators believe the mobile phone used to send the message remains in his possession and will be subjected to forensic examination.

The magistrate ordered that Kipglagat remain in custody until 15 June, when the case will return to court for mention. Prosecutors said he is being held at the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit because of the seriousness of the allegations and concerns that he may abscond.

The extradition process is expected to proceed once the required documentation is received from the United Kingdom and submitted before the court.
