Kano govt weds 1,520 couples, moves to ‘sanitise marriage’
KANO—No fewer than 1,520 couples were joined in marriage across the 44 local Government areas of Kano State yesterday, in a state-sponsored mass wedding.
Kano State instituted mass wedding in 2011 with full sponsorship that guarantees payment of dowry and free furniture. Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who attended the decentralised mass wedding at Kano Central Mosque, where 40 couples were joined, paid N20,000 dowries for each of the 1,520 widows, divorcees and spinsters. The wedding that was solemnised by the Chief Imam of Kano Central Mosque, Professor Sani Zaharadeen, was witnessed by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and thousands of Muslim faithful. Governor Ganduje said the state will now regulate marriages to sanitise the institution.
