Foreigners told not to taint Kenya’s image
Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery yesterday threatened to revoke citizenship of non-Kenyans “tainting the country’s image”. He told the parliamentary security team many foreigners have applied for dual citizenship. He said, however, his ministry will not hesitate to revoke the citizenship of individuals “giving us a bad name”.
Nkaissery told the National Assembly Committee on National Security and Administration that 2,939 non-Kenyans were issued with citizenship between August 2013 and this month.
He was responding to a petition by nominated MP Sunjeev Birdi on behalf of more than 80 frustrated petitioners who say they have applied for citizenship but have been kept waiting. The constitution allows non-Kenyans who have lived in the country for a continuous period of seven years to apply for citizenship.
