Family of Kenyan Student Found Dead in UK River Releases Burial Details

Preparations are underway to lay to rest Nelbert Kipruto Rirei at his family home in Nariri Village, Kesses, Uasin Gishu County, on Saturday, October 31, as investigators in the United Kingdom await further toxicology and laboratory tests to determine what killed him.

A post-mortem examination conducted in the UK found no signs of physical trauma or suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the student, whose body was retrieved from the River Cam in Cambridge. However, the examining pathologist was unable to immediately establish the cause of death. Samples were collected for comprehensive laboratory testing, with results expected to take several weeks.

The arrival of Rirei’s remains in Eldoret on Wednesday afternoon marked the start of final send-off plans for a family and community still searching for answers about his final hours. According to a funeral announcement issued by his family, the funeral cortege will depart the Eldoret Hospital Mortuary at 9 am on Friday, October 30.

The body will be taken to Nariri Village ahead of the burial service scheduled for 9 am on Saturday. To accommodate friends and members of the Kenyan diaspora in the UK who cannot attend the service in person, the family will provide a live stream of the proceedings.

Rirei went missing after failing to return home from work, prompting widespread concern among his friends and members of the Kenyan community in Cambridge. His roommate and close friends spent days attempting to reach him on his phone, which remained switched off, before reporting his disappearance to the local police.

The discovery of his body in the River Cam triggered urgent calls from both his family in Kenya and the UK diaspora for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to his death. Police officers in Cambridge launched an inquiry into his last known movements, though the initial post-mortem findings have offered few immediate answers to the family’s questions.

Local authorities in the UK confirmed that the investigation remains active pending the outcome of the laboratory analysis.
