Diaspora Pride: Kenyan Scientist Prof. Njoroge Leads Sh446M Breakthrough in Oesophageal Cancer Detection

Global Recognition: Kenyan Researcher Prof. Njoroge Secures Sh446M Award in Life-Saving Cancer Innovation
Kenyan researcher Professor George Njoroge has won a Sh446 million award alongside UK scientist Professor Robert Bristow for advancing early detection of oesophageal cancer.
Professor Njoroge, who is an investigator at Kenyatta University Teaching Referral and Research Hospital, received the Greater Manchester Cancer Award 2026 for his contribution to the groundbreaking project.
Working with a UK research team, the initiative introduced a healthcare model across Meru, Kisii, Nyeri, Nakuru and Kiambu counties aimed at improving cancer detection and treatment.
The programme trained more than 400 clinicians and over 500 community health workers. It also rolled out public awareness campaigns and mobile endoscopy services that have completed more than 1,000 procedures.
The initiative is helping detect oesophageal cancer earlier, improving chances of successful treatment for patients across Kenya.
