ACK to Build Ludwig Krapf Memorial Chapel
The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) to built a chapel and monument in honour of German church missionary John Ludwig Krapf.
Speaking during an anniversary service at All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi as the church celebrated 50 years since it became a Province in 1970, ACK Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit said the church is seeking approval from the government to erect commemorative chapel which will serve as a reminder of the journey of Christianity in the country.
Sapit said that the chapel will also honour Krapf who played a pivotal role in establishing the first church in Rabai.
“We want to erect a monument to remind us of the first journey of Ludwig Krapf where he met fishermen who introduced him to the village elders who led him to establish the church,” said Sapit.
The Archbishop also urged the government to partner with them to gather the necessary resources required for the construction of the monument.
“We will be more than willing to team up with the ministry and join our resources to erect the monument which will remind us of our history because it is important to keep important histories of our beginning,” he added.
President Uhuru Kenyatta who attended the service reiterated the government’s pledge to support religious institutions in the country calling on them to continue partnering with the government.
“As my father used to say, you are indeed the Church and you are indeed the society. And we need you at the very forefront to ensure that we who have also been given the mandate by the people to execute on their behalf an agenda to improve livelihoods we have also kept on our toes,” Uhuru said.
The head of state added that the church must work hand in hand with the government in order to bring up a generation of responsible empowered, God-fearing citizens.
“I look forward to working with you, not only as of the Anglican community but indeed with the entire religious community for us to see what is it that we can do together to get our children away from the challenges that they are going through.”
“Take me as a partner, take my government as a partner and I look forward to engaging with you and others as we seek solutions to these most pressing problems,” President Uhuru added.
John Ludwig Krapf came to East Africa in 1844 after he moved to Rabai where he established the first mission station in Kenya
