Sonko detained as police fire teargas, disrupt meeting with MCAs
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was briefly detained on Monday as police fired teargas to disrupt a meeting with members of the county assembly.
The meeting is said to have been taking place at the home of a city tycoon in Riverside.
It was not immediately clear what the agenda of the meeting was or why police disrupted it.
The embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is exploring all options to block his planned impeachment.
In a letter dated November 27 that was addressed to the Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly, Sonko cited an existing order barring his removal from office.
“By your purporting to process a fresh impeachment motion against Hon. Mike Sonko Mbuvi while these proceedings are pending, you have committed an act of intentional disrespect to these judicial proceedings…which constitutes contempt of court,” the letter from his lawyer Harrison Kinyajui reads in part.
