VIDEO] Mombasa Technical University closed after students protest over higher fees
The Technical University of Mombasa was closed indefinitely on Monday after students took to the streets in protest against fee increment
A notice at the college gave the students 30 minutes to vacate the premises.
They blocked roads around the institution in Tudor area, KRCS said via Twitter, and set two county lorries on fire, preventing access on Bakhstan road.
Police lobbed teargas canisters and fired in the air as the students engaged them in running battles.
The students accused the university of increasing the school fees by Sh3,000 without “official communication”.
“This fee also varies from one department to the other. In some classes it has been increased from Sh6,000 to Sh8,000,” one said.
“We also want the university to review supplementary exams,” another said, adding that VC Josphat Mwatela should resign for “incapacitation in service delivery”.
