UK-Based Kenyan Musician Richie Gathu Returns With New Single Lucky Me

Kenyan-born, UK-based musician Richie Gathu has released his new single, Lucky Me, marking his return to music after a year-long hiatus.
The track also introduces his forthcoming conceptual album, 6 DEGREEZ. Gathu stepped away from music while balancing his artistic career with full-time work.
The break later became a period of creative focus after he lost his job and was able to dedicate more time to recording and writing. During this period, he completed Lucky Me, a song that had remained unfinished for nearly two years.
The single centres on the relief and peace that come from leaving a toxic relationship. Rather than focusing on identity or heritage, the track reflects themes of freedom, recovery, and personal growth.
Gathu said the song forms the opening chapter of 6 DEGREEZ, an album that explores the recurring patterns of love, heartbreak, and emotional reflection.
He described the project as therapeutic, drawing on the emotional impact of a long-term relationship.
The album follows a cycle of experiences and emotions that shaped both the music and its wider narrative. Although Lucky Me does not heavily feature Kenyan musical influences, Gathu said those elements will appear more strongly in future work.
Inspired by the music he grew up listening to, he plans to incorporate Kenyan sounds into his evolving style as he builds an international profile. Gathu also said returning to music after a year away required time and discipline.
Once he regained momentum, however, he found himself creating with renewed focus and confidence.
