(PHOTOS)RETIRED PRESIDENT DANIEL MOI TURNING OUT TO BE A KEY PLAYER IN 2022 PRESIDENTIAL CONTEST
Retired President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi is turning out to be a key player in the 2022 succession politics.
Senior political leaders have been trooping to Kabarak to hold talks with the former president raising speculations of his role in the 2022 game plan.
Among those who have visited Moi in the recent past are, Former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta, President Uhuru Kenyatta, Raila Odinga, Hassan Joho and Kalonzo Musyoka.
Deputy President William Ruto failed to meet the former head of state despite a long wait at his Kabarak home in May this year.
Last year Mama Ngina Kenyatta paid a courtesy call to Moi in what was described as friendly, not a political visit.
However this year, Moi popularly referred to as Nyayo, has attracted the interest of leading politicians.
In April, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga visited Kabarak and held a meeting with Moi.
It was later reported that the two leaders consulted on the state of political affairs in the country.
Raila was followed by President Uhuru Kenyatta who paid a courtesy call to the Retired President in July.
Their separate visits to Kabarak came barely months after they pledged to work together in uniting the country.
This was closely followed by another high profile visit by Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho in August.
During the visit, Governor Joho, Mzee Moi and Baringo Senator Gideon held a closed door meeting that lasted for an hour.
Last week Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka became the latest key political figure to hold talks with the former president in the presence of his son, Gideon.
According to a statement from Mr. Moi’s office, the former head of state urged political leaders to shun differences arising from competition for power and positions, during the meet with Kalonzo.
However what has baffled Kenyans is that immediately after Kalonzo’s visit, State House Comptroller Kinuthia Mbugua also became a guest in Kabarak.
Mr Moi’s Press secretary Lee Njiru divulged that Mbugua visited to review operations in the office of the retired president.
It was reported that State House Comptroller was delivering a message of goodwill from President Kenyatta.
“Mr Mbugua reiterated that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration will continue to prioritise Mr Moi’s comfort,”read the statement.
The rush to Kabarak has left tongues wagging and sparked debate about the 2022 presidential election. Political observers say they read more into the visits than just courtesy calls.
The visits could be a pointer to early political realignments and the heightened political activities in Kabarak is also a clear indication that Moi can’t be ignore and will still plays a pivotal role in politics.
