PS Roseline Njogu Holds Talks With Kenyan Diaspora Leaders in Greece

Kenya has reaffirmed its support for citizens living abroad following a meeting in Athens between diaspora officials and leaders of the Kenyan community in Greece.
The session was led by Roseline Njogu, the Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, and brought together representatives of Kenyans living across Greece. Discussions focused on welfare, protection, and opportunities for citizens working and studying overseas, as the government seeks to strengthen its engagement with the diaspora.
The State Department for Diaspora Affairs, established in 2022, reviewed progress made since its formation. Officials highlighted developments in labour mobility partnerships, access to employment opportunities, and the expansion of support systems for migrant workers.
Njogu said protecting the rights and safety of Kenyans abroad remains a government priority. She also encouraged diaspora communities to stay involved in national development, noting their contribution through remittances, investment, and skills transfer.
She stressed the need for structured platforms that allow Kenyans overseas to take part in policymaking and national programmes. Community leaders welcomed the consultations and called for continued engagement with government officials.
They raised concerns about labour conditions, access to consular services, and integration into host societies. They also asked for clearer communication between diplomatic missions and Kenyan citizens abroad.
In response, Njogu pledged improvements to consular services, including faster processing of documents, emergency assistance, and legal support for citizens overseas.
Officials also discussed relations between Kenya and Greece, saying closer cooperation could create new opportunities in labour mobility, education exchanges, and economic partnerships. They said such initiatives would benefit Kenyans living abroad while strengthening ties between the two countries.
The Athens meeting forms part of a broader outreach programme by the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, which has been holding consultations with Kenyan communities in different countries. The programme aims to gather feedback, align priorities, and ensure that citizens abroad remain involved in Kenya’s social and economic development.
