Netherlands Grants Rwanda $10.8 Million for Port Development
The Netherlands has given a $10.8 grant to the Government of Rwanda, geared towards the development of four ports on Lake Kivu. The port developments seek to increase shipping, tourism and cross-border trade between Rwanda and the DRC.
With the project’s total cost amounting to $24 million, Netherlands’ funding only caters for 45% of the project. Other financiers of the port development project are TradeMark East Africa and the government of Rwanda, each contributing 50% and 5%, respectively.
With all these in play, the ports’s construction should be done by 2020, and are expected to be operational by 2022.
The Rwandan Transport Development Agency (RTDA) opines that three of the ports will have a capacity of about 1.5 million passengers per year, with the fourth one in Karongi district, will start with a capacity of approximately 300,000 passengers per year by 2020 and target 400,000 passengers by 2036.
