Murungi, Kindiki Back Ruto’s 2027 Re-election Bid

Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki have defended President William Ruto’s chances of winning a second term, arguing that his electoral record and the government’s development agenda put him in a strong position ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking at the burial of Mzee Patrick Baikilanya in Meru, Murungi said Ruto has never lost an election since first entering Parliament in 1997. He said opponents should not underestimate the President, arguing that Kenya’s political history shows serving presidents complete their constitutional terms.
“There is no election which Ruto has ever lost,” Murungi said. He urged Ruto’s rivals to focus on the 2032 election instead, adding that the President has repeatedly defeated opponents, including when they controlled the government, demonstrating his political strength.
Murungi made the remarks in the presence of Ruto, saying criticism of sitting presidents is common but has not prevented incumbents from securing a second term. Speaking separately at the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme in Elgeyo-Marakwet, Kindiki also expressed support for Ruto’s re-election.
Representing the President at the event, he urged political leaders to avoid early succession debates, saying they distract from the government’s current priorities.
Kindiki pointed to major infrastructure projects, including the Talanta Stadium, the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway expansion and the Isiolo-Mandera Highway, as examples of the administration’s work since taking office in 2022.
He also highlighted the NYOTA youth empowerment programme, fertiliser subsidies and the government’s environmental programme. He said 1.7 billion trees have already been planted towards the target of 15 billion by 2032.
“We must consolidate the gains we have achieved under the leadership of President William Ruto,” Kindiki said.
He described the opposition as lacking both direction and a clear plan.
