Kenyans on Edge as BBC Announces Major Job Cuts

The BBC plans to cut up to 2,000 jobs worldwide as part of a major restructuring, according to interim Director General Rhodri Talfan Davies.

Davies said the reductions, which represent about ten per cent of the organisation’s global workforce, are necessary to address a growing gap between income and expenditure. He pointed to rising production costs, declining licence fee revenue, and unstable commercial income as key pressures.

The BBC aims to save around £500 million over the next two years and has begun tightening controls on recruitment, travel, and spending on external consultants and industry events. The announcement has raised concerns at the BBC’s Nairobi bureau, now the organisation’s largest operation outside the United Kingdom.

The bureau employs nearly 600 staff across radio, television, and digital services and has recently expanded its role, including hosting the Focus on Africa podcast and co-presenting the Newsday programme. It remains unclear whether this growth will protect the bureau from cuts or expose it to similar reductions.

The restructuring comes at a time of wider strain in Kenya’s media sector. Over the past year, organisations such as Nation Media Group, Standard Group, and Mediamax have announced job losses, citing reduced advertising revenue and regulatory pressures.

Smaller outlets, including Switch Media and Look Up TV, have scaled back operations or closed. The BBC said it will take three to four months to determine how the changes will be implemented while maintaining core services across its platforms.
