Kenyan Footballer Dies in Hit-and-Run Accident

Gabriel Wandera, a former Tusker and Kakamega Homeboyz defender, died in a hit-and-run road accident in Busia County on Sunday, 19 April.

Wandera had earlier that day played for Division Two side Bossman Knights in a 3–1 defeat to Khwilare FC. He was sent off in the 20th minute of the match, which later became his final appearance.

Bossman Knights confirmed his death in a statement, describing the incident as a devastating loss and referring to him as “Gabby”. The club expressed condolences to his family, teammates and supporters.

Wandera previously played in the Kenyan Premier League with Bidco United and Nzoia Sugar FC before joining Tusker FC in 2019. He later featured for Kakamega Homeboyz and several Nairobi-based amateur sides, including Roto Moulders, Tuffrun, KenAfrica, Maveto and Ruiru Hotstars.

He was widely regarded as a dependable defender across the domestic game. Tributes were issued by clubs and former teammates. APS SEAL FC extended condolences to his family and colleagues, while a former Nzoia FC teammate referred to him as “my last man number five”.

His death follows the passing of Kakamega Homeboyz midfielder Silas Abungana in recent months, adding to a difficult period for the club. Wandera is remembered for his long involvement in Kenyan football and his career across both top-flight and lower-division teams.
