Kenya Census 2019 results
President Kenyatta: Kenya is the first country in Africa to release Census results 2 months after the exercise was concluded.
KNBS has released the Census results indicating that Kenya’s population is 47.5 million.
The results were released on Monday by KNBS director general Zachary Mwangi.
The Census was conducted from August 24 to 31.
Here is breakdown of the results;
COUNTIES WITH THE HIGHEST POPULATION
Nairobi (4.3 million). Of which 2,192,452 were male and 2,204,376 were female.
Kiambu (2.4 million). 1,187, 146 were male and 1,230,454 were female.
Nakuru (2.1million). 1,077,272 were male and 1,084,835 were female.
Kakamega (1.8 million). 897, 133 of which were male and 970,406 were female.
Bungoma (1.6 million). 812, 146 were male while 858, 389 were female.
LEAST POPULATED COUNTIES
- Lamu (143,920),
- Isiolo (268,002),
- Samburu (310,327),
- Tana River (315,943) and
- Taita Taveta (340,671).
FEMALES AND MALES
The data indicated that the country has 24, 1014,716 females compared to 23, 548, 056, 24 number of males.
The statistics recorded the number of intersex persons for the first time. The country has a total of 1,524.
INTERSEX POPULATION
Nairobi topped Kenya with the highest number of intersex persons. It was followed by Kiambu county. Here is the top 10 list.

HOUSEHOLD SIZE
The data shows that northern Kenya has the largest families.
Mandera leads with an average household size of 6.9 persons per family.
It is followed by Wajir at 6.1, Garissa 5.9, Marsabit 5.8, and Turkana 5.6.
Rift Valley’s West Pokot is also among counties with family sizes that average five persons at 5.3, while coastal county of Kwale at 5.0.
In Nairobi, household sizes are the lowest at 2.9.
In Central Kenya, Nyeri, Kirinyaga and Kiambu are at 3.0.
Murang’a and Embu stand at 3.3, which are among the lowest in the country. Mombasa stands at 3.1.
