Kenya Afya Njema Project Fundraiser on March 20, 2010- Kenya, heart and soul of Afya Njema
Please Support The Kenya Afya Njema Project by coming to our Fundraiser on March 20 at J.A. Stats on 99 Broads Street, Boston at 5pm-9pm.
Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases are on the rise in sub-Saharan Africa and new initiatives and ways of thinking are needed to address this emerging crisis. Kenya Heart and Sole: The Afya Njema Project attempts to contribute to this work. The mission of our project is to improve cardiovascular/metabolic health in central Kenya through surveillance, screening and the development of a risk reduction program that emphasizes community engagement and self-management. This program must be feasible, relevant to the Kenyan people and sustainable.
Kenya Heart and Sole is a partnership between UMass Boston College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS), Health for Nations, the Tumu Tumu and Kijabe Hospitals Schools of Nursing and the Kambui Clinic.
This international project extends our local work (Roxbury Heart and Sole) which addresses cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors in an underserved African American community. Together the Roxbury Heart and Sole and Kenya Heart and Sole projects enrich and advance our urban health mission with a global perspective.
Another delegation of students and faculty members will be returning to Kenya in June 2010.
