Kang’ata Joins DCP, Giving Gachagua a Major Political Boost in Mt Kenya
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has joined Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ahead of the 2027 General Election, ending months of speculation over his political future.
Kang’ata announced his move at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri, two months after saying he would not seek re-election as governor on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket. The decision marks his departure from President William Ruto’s ruling party after weeks of speculation.
Speaking during the announcement, Kang’ata said he would defend his seat on a DCP ticket in 2027 while maintaining his association with the Linda Mwananchi movement. “Come 2027, I will defend my seat via DCP but remain a bridge that connects with Linda Mwananchi,” he said.
Gachagua welcomed Kang’ata to the party, describing him as “a younger brother” and saying the governor’s decision reflected DCP’s growing support. He pointed to the party’s recent victory in the Ol Kalou by-election and its increasing representation in Parliament and county assemblies as signs of its expansion.
The DCP leader said the party aims to become the largest political force in both Parliament and county assemblies. He described Kang’ata’s entry as part of a wider effort to strengthen the party’s national presence and challenge UDA in future elections.
Kang’ata’s move is the latest step in a political career that has included several party affiliations. He was first elected as Kiharu MP in 2013 on a The National Alliance (TNA) ticket before winning the Murang’a Senate seat in 2017 under the Jubilee Party. In 2022, he was elected governor on a UDA ticket.
Several leaders allied to Gachagua attended the event at Wamunyoro. They included Senators John Methu, Mithika Linturi, Joe Nyutu, Kamau Murango, John Kinyua and Karungo wa Thang’wa, highlighting DCP’s efforts to strengthen its support in the Mt Kenya region.
