How a Simple Act of Kindness Helped a Kenyan Nurse Build a Career in the US
A Kenyan nurse working in the United States has credited a former colleague’s unexpected recommendation for launching his international career.
Amos Orwa, who was previously employed at Kijabe Mission Hospital, said his move into humanitarian work began when colleague Brenda Gathenya put his name forward for an urgent posting in South Sudan. The two were not closely acquainted, yet she recommended him without expectation of reward.
Orwa was deployed within days to Maban County, where he worked under demanding conditions that strengthened his professional skills and broadened his experience. The assignment also brought a notable increase in earnings, with his monthly pay rising from KSh 13,000 to KSh 50,000, paid in US dollars. He later recalled his surprise at receiving the higher salary.
Although initially contracted for one month, the role became a stepping stone to further opportunities in international humanitarian work. Through the experience, Orwa gained access to wider professional networks, which later supported his transition to roles in the United States.
He has since reflected on the significance of the recommendation, noting that Gathenya could have selected someone closer to her but chose him instead. He described the gesture as one he continues to value.
Now based in the US, Orwa has taken steps to support others in similar need. He recently assisted an online follower, Kelvin Maina, who had been injured in a fall and lost contact after damaging his phone. Orwa paid his hospital bills and replaced the device, timing the assistance with his own birthday.
