Diaspora Spotlight: Erastus Mwangi’s Path to Distinguished Recognition

Congratulations Erastus for being selected as a 2026 Distinguished Young Professional!🎉
“Erastus Mwangi has a full history as a dedicated public servant for the City of Lowell.
Currently he serves as the Assistant to the Mayor, where he works closely with residents, community organizations, and City departments facilitating accessibility, responsiveness, and inclusivity. Since joining the Mayor’s Office in 2022, he has served under three different mayors, demonstrating adaptability, professionalism, and a strong commitment to public service. He is the first African to serve as a Mayor’s Assistant in Lowell.
Originally from Kenya, he earned an associate’s degree in Banking and Finance in Nairobi. After moving to America, he continued his studies at Salem State University, where he studied Business Administration.
Erastus is actively involved in the community, having served as a juror for the MCC Asian Film Festival, a member of the Lowell Citizens Advisory Board for four years, and a volunteer with New England Golden Gloves. In addition, he has been selected to serve on the 2027 National Golden Gloves Tournament Committee. During his tenure, he supported key City initiatives, including Lowell’s recognition as the first U.S. Frontrunner City in Urban Transformation.
He is a brain tumor survivor, and his personal health has strengthened his dedication to giving back. Less than a year after his second brain surgery, he successfully ran the 2026 Boston Marathon as a symbol of resilience and determination. He finished in 4 hours and 58 minutes! Additionally, with his Marathon participation, he raised over $6000 for brain cancer research. Through his efforts he hopes to inspire and encourage others through his resilience and compassion.”
