Death strikes as seven students killed in dawn school fire 16 hospitalized
Seven students from Moi Girls High School in Nairobi have been confirmed dead following a dawn dormitory fire.
The seven are said to have suffered suffocation during a commotion to escape from the burning dormitory.
Education Cabinet Secretary, Dr Fred Matiang’i, who visited the school, further confirmed that ten others are nursing serious injuries that were sustained during the commotion.
The CS has also directed that the school be closed for two weeks and with immediate effect as investigations into the matter start.
It is reported that the girls’ hostel caught fire a around 2 am, an incident that saw property worth millions of shillings reduced to ashes and lives lost.
According to Kibra Administration Police boss, Enos Maloba, ten of students suffered suffocation from the smoke and fainted but were rushed to nearby health facilities for medical attention.
Mr Maloba strongly believes that the cause of the fire was an electric fault adding that a team of experts has been dispatched in the school to investigate the matter.
