Death of woman in police custody triggers riots in Kenya
Mercy Nanjala was said to have spent only nine hours at the Mariguini police station when she met her death.
According to The Star, police said she was rushed to hospital after she developed an epileptic attack. But her mother rubbished the claims, saying she was not epileptic.
A report by Daily Nation quoted her family as saying that she was bleeding and had signs of sexual assault by the time she was taken to hospital.
Nanjala had been arrested on Tuesday night for stealing a friend’s mobile phone. She had already handed it over to the police.
Her family now wants police to investigate what killed her, and why the police withheld the mobile phone in question.
