DAYSTAR UNIVERSITY UNREST

The Daystar University Senate has closed  its Nairobi and Athi River campuses amid unrest that has rocked the institution for the past few months. Acting Vice Chancellor James Kombo ordered all students and staff to vacate both campuses by Thursday at noon. “This informs you that Daystar University Senate sitting on 11 April 2018 closes by noon 12 April 2018,” read  his statement.

One of the students who was in the meeting called for help via their WhatsApp group: “Guys we call upon your help now. Policemen are attacking students at Daystar.”

There has been increasing unrest at the institution for a while after students demanded the resignation of Vice Chancellor Timothy Wachira over mismanagement.

On Thursday, April 5, the students boycotted classes to protest the leadership of Dr Wachira.

A communications student, for instance, decried a lack of studio and other necessary equipment to facilitate their studies.

Another said: “Many programmes lack adequate facilities yet the university has sunk Sh40 million into the establishment of a law school, which to date, has not admitted a single student.”
