Family of a Kenyan Man (NEWTON GATHIRI) Accused of Sexually Assaulting a 7-Year-Old Girl in Alabama Disputes Charges
Kenyan Family Appeals for Funds to Get Son Accused of Rape Out of US Jail [VIDEO]
he parents of a man accused of sexually assaulting a girl have asked Kenyans to help them pay $500,000 (Sh51 million) bond and $25,000 (Sh2.5 million) legal fees for his release.
Newton Githiri, 22, allegedly scaled the balcony of a Hoover apartment complex in Alabama, entered the seven year-old’s room and raped her in August.
He is facing charges of second-degree burglary, two counts of first-degree attempted sodomy, sexual abuse of a child less than 12 and first-degree sexual abuse/forcible compulsion.
The suspect, who was charged in September and had been granted the Sh51 million bond for each of the five offences, is being held at Jefferson county jail.
In the Kikuyu Diaspora TV clip, his father Johnson Njuguna maintains his son was wrongfully arrested and noted his family has been religious for the five years they have lived in the US.
“Newton was drunk and mistakenly went to the wrong apartment as they are on the same block. He thought he was in our house and asked to be let in to sleep,” he said.
An officer said the girl’s father restrained Githiri while the mother called 911. Captain Gregg Rector said the man punched Githiri in the face and physically restrained him until police arrived.
“This young girl immediately told her parents what had occurred. Our officers responded to what they believed was a burglary in progress but it turns out it was something much worse,” he said.
But Githiri’s parents disputed the account saying medical tests on the girl found no evidence that she was molested.
“We have tried talking to the police and other security officers here but we are yet to succeed in securing his release,” Njuguna said.
Githiri’s mother, Mary, said; “We hope fellow Kenyans across the globe will help us raise the money needed to get a good lawyer then we can start the fight to release our son.”
The parents said they hoped further investigations by Jefferson county police and the area’s District Attorney’s office would prove their son innocent.
