9 infrastructural projects which saw Uhuru win Africa development award
President Kenyatta has been feted internationally for overseeing the development of some of the best mega projects in Africa
Projects such as the SGR, Outering Road, Dongo Kundu Bypass are among the best in the continent -Others such as the 505km Isiolo-Marsabit Moyale highway has altered the face of hitherto neglected regions President Uhuru Kenyatta has become the first Kenyan leader to win the most prestigious infrastructure development award in Africa. He was on Friday, May 25, awarded the 2018 Super Prize Great Builder Babacar Ndiaye Award in South Korea for Jubilee government’s transformative projects in the railway, road and air sub-sectors as well as in street lighting.
Below we look at some of the transformative mega projects that helped President Kenyatta emerge the best in the continent. 1: Standard Gauge Railway No sooner had Uhuru assumed power in 2013 than it became clear that the SGR was going to be his pet project.
In a record four years, he had delivered 472 kilometres of one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in post-independent Africa.
The SGR project has completely changed the way people travel between Nairobi and Mombasa. A journey that used to take 10 hours by bus now takes only 4 hours on the SGR; at a cheaper cost and reduced risk of accidents. The mega project has also resuscitated the local tourism sector and greatly eased cargo transport from the Mombasa port.
