150 Kenyans head to China on academic scholarships

The Chairman of the Commission for University Education Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha says Kenya stands to benefit immensely from continued exchange programmes with foreign countries.

Speaking at the Chinese Embassy during a farewell reception for more than 150 Kenyans departing to China, Chacha on Thursday said the benefits could shape the country’s infrastructural development and economic growth.

“I want to thank the Government of China for this sponsorship this is because it will enhance the resource capacity in our country. I appreciate how China has been friends with Kenya because this has expanded the empowerment of people of Kenyan as far economic development and infrastructure is concerned,” Chacha said.

Capital FM News spoke to some of the students departing the country next week to pursue various academic programmes in Chinese universities.

“I am going to pursue International Economics this is a great privilege and am proud to be selected to study in china I will bench-marking to know why China is growing economically,” said Masimbo Dennis from Kenyatta University.

“This is my first time to board a plane and am very excited. I will be pursuing railway engineering,” said Martin Bundotich from Eldoret University.

Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Liu Xianfa said the sponsorship offered to students is aimed at benefiting the two countries.

The Ambassador added that China-Kenya bilateral relations have upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Partnership.

“China-Kenya friendship has a long history; in recent years, the relationship has witnessed rapid development which has seen China become Kenya’s greatest trading partner. Mutual political trust has grown to another level,” said Liu Xianfa.

He wished the selected students success as well as a good stay in China.
