You Can Now Legally Fly A Drone In Kenya
Kenya has legalized the use unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), for commercial and recreational purposes. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority under the Civil Aviation (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) Regulations, Act 2019, has legalized the use of drones which has been in the past illegal.
A person person is eligible to own a UAS as long they are a Kenyan Citizen or a resident in Kenya who has attained the minimum age of eighteen years. A locally registered company is also elegible to own a drone in the country.
The act prohibits the transfer of drone ownership unless one seeks approval from the Authority. further, it is still illegal for civillians to own, register, or operate a drone with military specifications.
Kenyans will now be able to import drones after acquiring a permit from the Authority. For exportation, a person must “notify the Authority in writing and obtain a de-registration certificate.”
In order to own and fly a drone in the country, Kenyan creatives will be required to register the drone, the Authority shall then issue a certificate of registration.
The Authority says it will establish a database that’ll be used for the identification of drones and their respective owners. This will deter owners from making any modification to their drone specifications.
