Uhuru Strips Senators Kipchumba Murkomen, Susan Kihika of Their TopSenate Seats
Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has been stripped of his Senate Majority Leader seat.
Murkomen, who was elected to the prestigious position in 2017, has now been replaced with his West Pokot counterpart Samuel Poghisio, a Kanu Senator.
Murkomen was ejected from the seat during a Jubilee Parliamentary Group meeting for senators held at State House, Nairobi on Monday, May 11th.
Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika, who served as Senate Majority Whip, has also been replaced by Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata.
The Deputy Senate Majority Leader seat has been handed to Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo Adan while nominated Senator Farhiya Ali Haji is the new Deputy Majority Whip.
In a statement, State House said the changes are aimed at strengthening the Jubilee-Kanu coalition’s Senate leadership.
Senators Murkomen and Kihika, both close allies of Deputy President William Ruto, have been accused of sabotaging Uhuru’s agenda.
The new changes come in the wake of a post-election coalition deal signed between Jubilee Party and Kanu last week.
Already, DP Ruto allies led by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot have criticized the new changes.
“You will never see photos of the purported Jubilee Senators PG for the very simple reason that NUMBERS do not lie. Of the 35 Jubilee Senators, 23 kept off. What has befallen the ruling party? Amidst a global health pandemic, we are engaged in such monkey business?” Senator Cheruiyot posed on Twitter.
Moses Kuria wrote: “I have always been in denial that we didnt steal the 2013 and 2017 elections. Today its almost clear. Congratulations belatedly Baba.”
