One dead, three critically injured in Makutano flyover crash

One person has died and three others, including a traffic police officer, were critically injured following a road accident at the Makutano flyover along the Makutano–Sagana highway in Kirinyaga County on Wednesday night.
The crash occurred at around 7pm when a boda boda rider, who was heading in the wrong direction towards Sagana under the flyover, collided head-on with a matatu. The rider sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at a private hospital in Makutano town.
As a traffic police officer responded to the scene, a saloon car allegedly defied orders to stop and rammed into the matatu. In the process, the vehicle struck the officer and two civilians who were assisting in directing motorists away from the accident scene.
The three — including the traffic officer — sustained critical injuries and are receiving treatment at Mwea Mission Hospital in Karira.
Three other individuals suffered soft tissue injuries and were treated and discharged.
Residents, led by Martin Njoroge, expressed shock over the incident, blaming the boda boda rider for riding against traffic and the saloon car driver for ignoring police instructions on the busy highway.
Police have urged motorists and pedestrians to adhere to traffic rules, particularly along the flyover and the dual carriageway, to prevent similar accidents.
The vehicles involved, along with the motorcycle, were towed to Makutano Police Station pending inspection.
